During his career, Nicolás has focused his practice on comprehensive corporate advice, labour law, and public law.

Career Path

  • He was Minister of Labour and Social Welfare from March 11, 2018, to October 28, 2019.
  • He was a Deputy of the Republic of Chile between 2002 and 2018, being President of the House of Deputies of Chile between 2012 and 2013.
  • Throughout his parliamentary career he was a member of the Labour Commission, chairing on several occasions.
  • In January 2020, he was appointed Ambassador of Chile in Argentina, a position he held until March 2022.
  • In November 2022, he joined GNP_Canales as Legal and Public Affairs Director, where he leads strategic legal advisory services with a focus on labor and union-related matters for leading companies. His expertise also includes arbitration and immigration advisory. He currently serves on the boards of several prominent organizations.

Education

  • LL.B., Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
  • Ph.D. in “Governance and Rule of Law” at the University of Salamanca, Spain.
  • Master at the Extension School of Harvard University.

Academic Experience

  • For more than twenty years Nicolás has been a teacher in different institutes of higher education.
  • He is currently a professor at the Law School of the Universidad Andrés Bello, in the Department of Public and Labour Law.
  • During the first semester of 2022, Nicolás taught classes on “Public Law and Rule of Law in Latin America” ​​at the FIU (Florida International University), a master class he shared with the former President of Argentina Mauricio Macri.
